Hillside Market Garden is a new business venture by growers Simon and Jenny. It is located on an acre of rented land in Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire and is part of Wassledine estate whose ethos is to leave the farm in a better condition in terms of productivity, beauty and biodiversity than when they started. Hillside Market Garden’s philosophy is based around organic principles and has adopted a no-dig approach to help build soil health and biodiversity to grow great crops without the need for chemicals and fertilizers. We have developed 150 permanent no-dig beds that will be used to facilitate the growing of year-round fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as fresh cut flowers throughout the seasons. Polytunnels will be used to enable tender crops, like tomatoes and cucumbers to be grown and for growing crops throughout the winter. Central Bedfordshire has a rich history of market gardening. However, over the past 100 years the small-scale market gardens once a common feature of many towns and villages have steadily been replaced by large scale mechanical farms producing just one or two crops, primarily arable. Today, access to truly locally grown and seasonal vegetables and fruit is very limited.
